Paper Self Assessment returns must reach HMRC by 31 October 2026

Paper Self Assessment returns for the 2025 to 2026 tax year must reach HMRC by 11.59pm on 31 October 2026. The test is arrival, not posting.

The date applies to paper filing only. It sits earlier in the year than the online route, which is the whole reason paper filers carry a separate date. Missing it does not close Self Assessment for the year. It moves the filer onto the online route, which carries its own later deadline.

Paper filers for 2025 to 2026

Sole traders, landlords and directors who file on paper. Anyone who files online is on a different date and is not caught by this one.
